Castle stood on a low mound in Ballina grassland until men blew it up to furnish stones for Moyne. Richard Burke fitz Tho. held it in 1574, but no tower, gate or room remains except a spread of large boulders and a rectangular bawn beside the destroyed site. The castle gave up its shape to build another place, leaving behind only the scattered bones of its own walls.

On a low mound in undulating grassland. In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'Richard Burke fitz Tho.' (Nolan 1901b, 119). According to Nolan (1901a, 40), 'It was blown up to furnish stones for Moyne'. No visible surface trace survives apart from a spread of large boulders. A rectangular bawn (L 40m, Wth 25m) abuts the monument at N and a field system (GA058-010002-) lies to NW and N. Richard Burke fitz Tho. held Castle, unclassified in Ballina in 1574. It is remembered for being demolished in the 17th century to provide stone for the construction of Moyne Castle.
