Castle

Indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of ‘The Liberties of the Citty of Kilkenny’ and on the Down Survey parish map of St John's in 17th-century townland of Archers Rath and Blanchfields Land which corresponds closely with the modern townland of Archersrath (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The castle is indicated towards the lower portion of the townland, at the base of the narrow neck before it widens out. The terrier accompanying the parish map mentions that there is, 'In Archersrath a Castle well repaired' and it lists the proprietors as, 'Tho[mas] Archer And Sir Edward Blanchfield' (ibid.). The precise location of the castle within this area of the townland is unknown.
