The site of Baggotrath Castle is located on the N side of Baggot Street Upper, between Nos.44-46. A late 17th century drawing by Francis Place of the site shows a three storey tower-house with a gabled building attached. It had a parapet level. A drawing by Beranger in 1766 shows the tower-house in a ruinous condition with thatched side chambers attached. Grose (1791, 10, PL.8) mentions entrenchments about the castle. The castle was involved in the Battle of Rathmines in 1649 (Killannin Lord & Duignan 1967, 237). It was associated with the Fitzwilliam family in the 14th-century. In the beginning of the 19th century the ruins of Baggotrath Castle were completely demolished prior to building on the site (Maher 1932, 5-6). No visible surface trace survives.
