Castle (Site of)

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Knocknamallavoge stands above a western Cork valley with no castle left to see. A survey marked the site in 1842, but human memory withdrew before the ink dried. What remains is a empty chair at the edge of the world, waiting for someone to remember why it was built.
Overlooking valley to W; no visible surface trace of castle marked 'site of' on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Nothing seems to be known of its history (Healy 1988,59). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
