Castle of St John is an early 16th-century L-plan tower house in the centre of Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway. The Adairs of Kilhilt built it around 1510, then it became a home, a court, a police station, a military garrison during the Killing Times of Covenanter persecution in the 1680s, a Victorian-era prison and a Second World War ARP base. Its rooms may still feel crowded with those uses: a chamber for judgment, a cell for fear, a watchroom for air-raid alarms.
