Castle of Cullen of Buchan was the ancestral seat of the Barclay de Tolly family, one of Scotland’s oldest lines, yet no castle remains are evident today. The Mains of Cullen farmhouse absorbed pieces of that lost structure, including coat-of-arms stones and architectural masonry from different periods. A 2001 fire exposed how much of the old identity had already blended into ordinary farm life before demolition completed the transformation.
