What is recorded here

Castle Street still cuts through Banff where medieval stone and soil marked the boundary between ordinary life and recorded power. The site carried a castle, a house and a motte, giving the town a vertical heart before modern walls existed. People may have climbed the mound, watched the coast or waited for decisions that changed whether they ate, left or disappeared. The street preserves that shape even when the chambers no longer answer.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Banff, Castle Street, Banff Castle and Old Castle as Castle (medieval), House (medieval), Motte (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Banff Castle was built in the 13th century by the Comyn family, who were powerful feudal lords in medieval Scotland. It is important as a historical stronghold associated with the Comyns, who played a significant role in Scottish politics and the Wars of Independence.
