Castle Mound

Castle

What is recorded here

Llanthomas Castle Mound stands in Llanigon, a Norman motte built after 1081 from dug earth and local timber. It guarded the River Wye ford beside the old church of St. Eigon, whose dedication may honour a first-century saint or a sixth-century one. The mound still rises nine metres above the lane, a compact witness to medieval defence and the buried life of Trefynys.
Castle Mound is shown as a castle on the public map of South Kesteven. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
