Fifty metres south east of St John the Baptist's Church, a Norman motte-and-bailey earthwork still rises from the Shropshire soil. Built during the eleventh or twelfth century, the mound marked the military reorganisation of the Marches after the Conquest. No stone tower remains, yet the grassy ridge preserves the shape of a border fortress where men watched the road and waited for trouble.
