Carrickahilla is a vanished castle on a Waterford rock knoll, reduced to memory after surviving as a stump into the nineteenth century. Garret Fitzgerald of Dromana owned it in 1640, suggesting his family used the outcrop as a local marker of status rather than a grand fortress. The land has taken back the stones, leaving only the shape of the knoll to hint at rooms, guards and arguments now lost.

Situated on a knoll of rock outcrop in a low-lying landscape. Described as 'an old stump of a castle' which was owned by Garret Fitzgerald of Dromana (WA029-021001-) in 1640 (Simington 1942, 70); it was still extant in 1841 (O'Flanagan 1929, 31). It is not visible now at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Garret Fitzgerald of Dromana owned Carrickahilla Castle in 1640, and it remained standing into the early 18th century. The site is remembered as a historical remnant of early Irish landholding and local gentry influence in the region.
