Dungannon Castle rose in Drumcoo during the post-medieval and seventeenth centuries, serving the O'Neill name before human ambition surrendered to decay. Its stones reappeared only as a scheduled archaeological site, yet the ground still remembers the weight of rooms, guards and decisions made in darkness. What is lost is not nothing; it is the shape of the people who stood there, waiting for the world to notice them.

The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as CASTLE & HOUSE (SITE OF): DUNGANNON CASTLE or O'NEILL'S CASTLE. Recorded period: POST-MED; C17TH. Recorded protection: Scheduled. Dungannon Castle, also known as O'Neill's Castle, was built by the O'Neill family, the Gaelic chieftains of Clandeboy, in the 17th century. It is remembered as a significant stronghold associated with the historic power base of the O'Neills in Ulster.
