Castle Fraser Policies holds cisterns dating from 1561 to 1899, when water had to be caught, kept clean and carried into the castle before pipes turned supply into a habit. Those stones may have served kitchens, gardens or chambers now absent, but they still mark the moment human arrogance began expecting the earth to provide on command.
