Castell Newydd Emlyn rose from timber and earth on the River Teifi by the 1250s, then hardened into stone by 1287 under Mareudydd ap Rhys. The castle gave the border town its name and anchored a district where water power later drove mills and printing. Civil war reduced it to ruins, but the castle yard still holds a war memorial and a chapel plaque, keeping the old defensive line visible beside the living market town.
