Castell Malgwyn Bridge 3; Castle Malgwyn

Castle Malgwyn still stands opposite Llechryd, a Georgian house built around 1795 for Sir Benjamin Hammet after he bought the estate and closed the old road through it. The bridge beside the house crossed a water conduit that fed the nearby tinworks, tying domestic grandeur to industrial hunger. Hammet died young, his son died younger, and the Gower family later inherited, improved and finally sold the place. What began as a man’s attempt to own a landscape became a house that outlived every name attached to it.
