What is recorded here
Cashel is a fairy fort or stone ringfort in Tully (carbury By., Calry Ed), County Sligo, Ireland. The circular area measures 25m across and sits on the level summit of a broad ridge. An internal drystone wall and external stone wall surround the centre, though both have collapsed into rubble banks. Modern field walls now cover parts of the outer structure, hiding the original entrance and boundary lines.
Situated on the level summit of a broad N-S orientated ridge with natural ground level sloping down gently from the site NE-NW. Circular area (diam. 25m) defined by a drystone wall of rubble limestone (Wth 4m; int. H 0.6-1m). Immediately outside this wall is a berm (Wth 4m) and an external stone wall (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.6-0.8m). The internal and external stone walls have largely collapsed the form banks of rubble limestone. The original facing of un-coursed, roughly quarried, blocks of limestone (av. dims. L1m; Wth 1m; T 0.4m) survives sporadically on the internal wall and is absent from the external wall. From NE-SE the internal side of the bank has been rebuilt as a drystone field wall. Modern field walls have been built on top of the collapsed outer cashel wall SE-NW. The original entrance is not recognisable.
