Carrigmahon Villa

Detached four-bay two-storey house, built c.1930, central paired bays flanked by square- and circular-plan towers. Roughcast rendered parapets concealing roof and gutters to main block, having cast-iron downpipes to rear. Oversailing rendered eaves course and stepped arcaded corbelling surmounted by render coping to front elevation parapet. Arcaded render corbels surmounted by cornice and crenellations to circular-plan tower. Moulded render cornice surmounted by crenellations to square-plan tower. Roughcast rendered walls with rendered plinth, having rusticated render quoins to front elevation. Box bay timber casement windows on render corbels to front elevation. Square-headed window openings with limestone sills elsewhere, having raised render surrounds and timber casement windows to towers and side (north) elevation. Two-over-two and four-over-four pane timber sliding sash windows to side (south) elevation. Ocular opening with raised render block-and-start surround to upper stage of square-plan tower accommodating recent square-headed louvre. Square-headed door opening within rusticated render surround to side (north) elevation, comprising pilasters and arch with voussoirs and render coping. Glazed timber door flanked by glazed timber side panels and two-pane overlight.

Set on the site of a pair of semi-detached Victorian villas, this house was built by Robin D. Joyle in the first part of the twentieth century. Occupying an elevated position overlooking the harbour, it makes a notable addition to the surrounding area. Its architectural form is curious, while some elements are clearly inspired by historic revivalist styles others embrace the modernist idiom, making it a quirky addition to the architectural heritage.
