What is recorded here
Carns is a small grass-covered cairn on a low rise in County Clare, mapped as early as 1897 and still standing within an old multiperiod field system. It faces a steep cliff to the southeast and open lower ground to the west, giving it the shape of a watching stone rather than a hidden one. People may have set it there to mark a boundary, remember a loss, or simply claim a fine view for themselves.
On a low rise near the SE edge of a semi-karst plateau with a cliff c. 35m to the SE and also commanding wide views over lower ground to the W. In rough pasture within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL010-064001-). One of two features hachured and named ‘Carns’ on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map (CL010-064037- lies c. 60m to the NE). This small subcircular cairn (7.6m E-W; 5m N-S; H 0.8-1.3m) is covered in grass around its sides. Some stone has spilled out from N to E.
