Carn is a small cairn on a narrow plateau shelf in County Clare, marked on maps from 1897 but described as entirely removed by 1915. It may have been a genuine ancient monument or merely farm clearance spoil kicked out from the nearby cashel. The distinction vanished under pasture and time, leaving behind a low circle of stones and a name preserved in survey lines.

On a narrow shelf on a plateau, in pasture within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). Indicated and named ‘Carn’ on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Described by Westropp (1897, 118) as a ‘small’ cairn but later (Westropp 1915, 255) as ‘entirely removed’. On inspection in 1997 a low cairn (diam. 4m; H 0.5m) was noted but it appeared to be a clearance cairn possibly related to spill from Cahercutteen cashel (CL009-059039-) c. 18m to the N. A hut site (CL009-059038-) lies c. 20m to the SW and a megalithic structure (CL009-059042-) lies c. 46m to the ESE. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 9 February 2022

Neolithic passage tomb; dates to the early to middle Neolithic period (c. 3700–3000 BCE). It is significant as part of the Burren’s dense concentration of megalithic tombs, reflecting the region’s importance in early Irish funerary and ritual practices.
