Carn

At the highest point (OD 782’) in Cappaghkennedy, in rough pasture, with wide views out to the NW and NE and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL010-064001-). Indicated and labelled ‘Carn’ on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. This grass-covered circular cairn (diam. c. 10m; H 1.2-1.6m) has a slight hollow (0.4m) at the top which is the likely former location of a trigonometrical station also shown on the OS 6-inch mapping. Large and medium sized flagstones are scattered on S side of the cairn. There is a second cairn (CL010-030----) c. 110m to the NW, and a third (CL010-029----) c. 165m to the W. Neolithic passage tomb, dating to approximately 3000–2500 BCE. Its location on a prominent hilltop suggests ritual or ceremonial significance, typical of Neolithic funerary and ceremonial sites in the region.
