Carn

On N edge of summit of Slievenamon slightly E of the highest point. Extensive views in all directions though slightly impeded to W by summit of Slievenamon. The cairn is mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'a great heap of Earth and stones called Shyfyne uppon the topp of the Mountaine of Slievnamam' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 259-60). Large, roughly circular cairn (dims. 25m N-S; 22m E-W; H 3.25m W and 4.35m E) of loose sandstone. On the E side the cairn is situated on the edge of a natural precipice of massive outcrop (H 5.5m) which forms the appearance of a blocked entrance and which local folklore described as Fionn Mac Cumhaill's table (Borlase 1897, vol. 1, 55). The summit of the cairn has been augmented by hill-walkers to form a more compact cairn. The passage tombs at Knockroe (KK034-019001-) and Baunfree (KK034-031----), Co.
