What is recorded here
Careston Castle is a 16th-century L-plan tower house in Angus, Scotland, built about 1582 by Sir Henry Lindsay. Its chimney-pieces copy designs from Jacques Androuet du Cerceau's Second livre, and its vaulted rooms, scale-and-platt stair and turnpike stair still shape the building. Two wings are gone, one vault has been removed, and much of the ground floor now holds storage rather than life. What remains is a sharp, proud fragment of a larger house, carrying the name of Keraldus and the hands of everyone who has owned it since.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Careston Castle as Pit Alignment (prehistoric)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
