Section of the Lower Boyne Canal, built c.1760, now disused. Ashlar limestone canal walls and an ashlar limestone lock. Single-arch masonry road bridge with cut stone voussoirs and random rubble walls to site.
The Boyne Navigation between Navan and Drogheda was partly funded and supported by William Burton Conyngham of Slane Castle. The Lower Boyne Canal from Drogheda to Slane was constructed between 1759 and 1789 by the Commissioners of the Inland Navigation under the supervision of Thomas Omer at a cost of seventy five thousand pounds. The ashlar masonry utilised in the construction of the bridge and channel was clearly executed by skilled craftsmen.
