Camden Fort Meagher

Detached seven-bay single-storey office, built c.1830, having lean-to extension and porches to front (east). Now disused. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, overhanging eaves, cast-iron rainwater goods and recent rooflight. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls with ventilation openings to plinth level, having timber louvres. Timber clapper board walls to extension and porches on rendered plinths. Camber-headed window openings with bipartite timber casement windows. Camber-headed door openings with timber door frames and casemented overlights. Rendered retaining walls to rear and side (north). Set within military complex. Various related structures to site.

Located within Fort Meagher (formerly Camden Fort), this is one of a number of buildings evident on the first edition Ordnance Survey map. This building was used as offices, and retaining much original fabric, is an interesting example of its type. Fort Meagher played a significant role in the defence network in Cork harbour, and was extended and fortified by the British in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Together with Fort Davis (formerly Carlisle Fort) on the opposite side of the harbour, this pair marked the entrance to a heavily fortified coastal area, with Spike Island, Cobh and Haulbowline all forming part of an extensive military complex.
