Caltragh

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Caltragh is a children's burial ground in Corraree AND Ballygatta, County Roscommon, Ireland. It stands on a rise beside Cloonoghil church, where uninscribed markers still mark the ground. The name Caltragh preserves its function, even though the stones recorded by the Ordnance Survey have disappeared.
On a rise in an undulating landscape. The burial ground (RO051-061002-) at Cloonoghil church (RO051-061001-) has uninscribed grave-markers and is locally known as a childrens burial ground (Gannon 1972), perhaps because it is described as 'Caltragh' in italic lettering on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map.
