What is recorded here
Calluragh Burial Ground appears on the first OS map as a children's burial place, yet no trace remains at that exact spot. The name reappears half a kilometre south-east on the second map, suggesting the first survey misplaced rather than invented the site. Whatever children were laid to rest there, the land kept their names only long enough for a cartographer to drop them into the wrong field.
Calluragh Burial Ground: This site is titled as such on the first edition of the OS map, but no indication of its exact location is provided. There is no locally known burial ground here, but a 'Calluragh' (KE106-056005-) is marked on the second edition of the OS map less than half a kilometer to SSE. It is possible that the name was incorrectly positioned on the first edition.
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1045. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
