Cairn

Cairn, Ballyneillan is a flat-topped stone mound on the Termon plateau, marked by five hollows on its surface and one possible buried chamber. It sits at an edge between townlands and baronies, with a quarry nearby and other cairns scattered across the plateau. Road work in the 1870s broke into it, and later writers disagreed about whether a stone burial box had appeared inside. That unresolved difference still gives the mound its strangeness: a small hilltop place holding dead people, memory and contradiction together.
