What is recorded here
Crocán na Spáinneach still holds two buried chambers inside its irregular stone pile, waiting beneath elevated rocky pasture on the eastern edge of a large limestone plateau. The cairn stretches twelve to thirteen metres across with a narrower tail pointing northwest, while upright slabs in its western half hint at further forgotten rooms. Two cashels watch from nearby, one thirty metres north and the other ninety-five metres east, as if the whole slope remained a lived-in landscape rather than a dead ruin.
In elevated rocky pasture, on an E-facing slope near the E edge of a large limestone plateau, overlooked by higher ground to the W and NW and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL005-160001-). The area is named ‘Crocán na Spáinneach’ on Tim Robinson’s Burren Map (1977). An irregularly shaped cairn (12-13m N-S; 12m E-W; H at N 0.5-1m; H at E 0.8m) with an extension (c. 7m) to the NW. The cairn contains two cists (CL005-160028- and CL005-160047-) in its NE and SE quadrants respectively. Additional, less clearly defined cists are indicated by the presence of upright slabs (up to H 0.45m) in the W half of the cairn. The monument is surrounded by a broadly concentric mound wall from E to W visible on OSi MapGenie orthophotos (2013-2018). A cashel (CL005-160031-) is located c. 30 to the N and a second cashel (CL005-160033-) is locate c. 95m to the E.
