Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cairn sits at the southern edge of the island, a much-reduced D-shaped ring of stones barely half a metre high beside a rugged field wall. It may have marked a burial, a boundary, or a meeting place before people stopped tending it and the sea wind took the rest.
This monument came to light during the course of fieldwork on the AranLIFE Farming Project (2014-2018) (see www.aranlife.ie). It is located at the S end of the island in area of rough rocky grazing and is bounded on the W side by a NNE-SSW running field wall. It consists of a much-robbed out possible D-shaped cairn (11m N-S; 7m E-W; max. H 0.45m). A number of set stones are visible at E. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 19 October 2020

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
