Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Carran is a small limestone village in County Clare where Michael Cusack helped found the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Burren’s rocky pasture, old churches and nearby dolmen give it a stark, ancient character. Its name means the cairn, fitting a place where memory, sport and landscape still meet.
On the steep NW slope of a ridge which is partly overgrown with hazel, but offers wide views out W-N-E. Listed as ‘Cist’ in the RMP (1996), on the basis of information from Tom Coffey, who also described it as ‘Cairn’ (1994, SMR file). Unlocated in an inspection of the area in 1999. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 26 May 2023
A Neolithic cairn, likely dating to the 4th–3rd millennium BCE; its classification as a cist may indicate a small burial chamber within, reflecting early funerary practices in the region.
