Cairn

Cairn, clearance cairn

What is recorded here

Clearance destroyed two small chambers and buried quartz evidence while the largest mound survived beneath thick vegetation. The valley dropped away on every side, exposing the reef as a deliberate stage rather than a forgotten hill. Human hands built the stage, lived beside it, measured it with bones and balls of quartz, then nearly erased it for housing. What remains is not a complete monument but a witness: large enough to resist forgetting, damaged enough to prove the world still turns its back on what it does not understand.
For descriptive account see O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 29-30, no. 56). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
