Burying Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Children's Burying Ground in Ballywalter, County Mayo, holds about a hundred low markers in rough pasture just south of the local church. Grass and weeds have smothered most of the stones, making the place feel less like a recorded graveyard and more like a hidden chamber the land keeps to itself. The children may have been parish children, sickly or unlucky, given a small corner near the church where adults could weep without ceremony.
In rough pasture, just S of church (MA110-027001-). Irregular area (14m N-S; 15m E-W), bounded by trees to W, contains c. 100 low grave markers. Heavily overgrown. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 665. Date of upload: 28 October 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
