Burnt spread in Bray

In 1984 the remains of three burnt features - possibly hearths or fulachta fiadh - were exposed during drainage operations at Bray, Valencia Island. They were located in peat on a gentle, N facing slope, between Bray Head and Coosagauna. They survived as lenses of stone and charcoal, measuring up to .5m thick and 3m long. Lying on .8m of peat, they occured .6m below the present bog surface. The largest example yielded a radiocarbon date of 3160±90 BP (Mitchell 1989, 79). The above description is derived from A.
