Burnt pit in Ballyvergan West

One of two burnt pits (see CO067-080----) and an area of rake-out material that were excavated in 2001 following archaeological testing and monitoring on the N25 Youghal Bypass. This, the smaller of the pits (0.67m N-S; 0.62m E-W) was subcircular in plan and contained frequent charcoal inclusions. Both pits showed signs of oxidisation, indicating exposure to heat. The spread (0.6m N-S; 0.4m) of rake-out material also showed signs of oxidisation. (Noonan 2001a; 2003g, 55-6) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
