Burnt mound in Unknown Townland

Pre-development excavations in 2003 revealed the remains of a burnt mound on a small natural ridge. It measured4m by3.7m and had a maximum depth of 0.15m. The charcoal sampled was identified as alder, commonly found in fulachta fiadh material and elm and blackthorn. The calibrated radio-carbon date gave an early to mid-Bronze Age date for this feature (1938-1744BC) (Cryerhall, A 2006, 136).

Burnt mound, Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. These features are typically associated with domestic or ritual activities, such as heat-treated stone use in cooking or ceremonial contexts.
