Burnt mound in Cartron (costello By., Aghamore Par.)

In an area of marsh, rush-grown ground, now converted to forestry plantation. This burnt mound was discovered in 2010 during archaeological testing (10E0483) in advance of a proposed development. There was no trace of the monument at ground level prior to the testing. It was revealed in the test trench as a spread (19m NE−SW; 8m NE−SW) of heat-shattered stone in a charcoal-rich soil. Three areas with noticeably higher concentrations of charcoal were noted, two in the SE and one in the NW part of the spread. The burnt mound was preserved in-situ and not fully excavated (Delaney 2011). There was no visible surface trace of the burnt mound during an inspection of the location undertaken in January 2016 in advance of forestry development (Wallace, 2016).
