What is recorded here

Burncastle is a settlement in the Scottish Borders, recorded without a date or visible boundary. It may have been a village, a estate or a military camp, but no surviving feature confirms which. The name suggests fire and defense, yet the land holds no castle wall or hearth ash. What burned there, and who watched it burn, has vanished with the shape of the place.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Burncastle as Settlement (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
