Burleigh Castle stands in ruins near Milnathort, its thick five-foot walls still holding the shape of a late 15th-century tower house built by the Balfour family. The south-west tower carries the date 1582, marking a later expansion that joined the structures with a curtain wall and arched gate. Robert Balfour lost the property after joining the Jacobite cause in 1715, forcing him to flee France while the castle passed into other hands. Much of the interior has vanished, leaving only the vaulted basement and empty stair to hint at the life once lived inside.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Burleigh Castle as House (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Burleigh Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Burgh or Burgh family, a prominent noble lineage in medieval Scotland. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in the Scottish Borders, reflecting the turbulent history of the region during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
