Falkland Castle rose after 1160 when King Malcolm gave Duncan, Earl of Fife, the hunting estate, turning a remote Fife landscape into a inhabited medieval centre. The castle may have replaced an earlier hunting lodge, and its presence drew workers, artisans and a whole settlement toward the foot of the Lomond Hills. It was not merely a defensive tower; it was the reason Falkland became Falkland.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Falkland Castle as Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Falkland Castle, a medieval tower house in Fife, Scotland, was built in the 16th century by the powerful Leslie family, who were significant landowners and political figures in the region. The castle is remembered as part of the historic Falkland Palace estate, a key royal residence associated with Scottish monarchy and the broader Leslie heritage.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
