Fifty bodies were piled above each other inside a thirty-metre mound near Donnybrook when workers broke through the soil in 1877. One man lay separately, stretched north to south beside an iron sword whose handle sparkled with gold and silver inlay. He may have been a warrior proud enough to refuse the heap, or the heap may have formed around him later. Either way, the dead crowded the living land until diplomacy forgot the bones beneath its polished gates.

In 1877 a circular mound (diam. c. 30m) covering an estimated fifty human remains was discovered near Donnybrook village on the grounds of the present German embassy (Stokes 1895, 5-25). The remains lay 'piled above each other' except for one extended inhumation which lay north-south and accompanied by an iron sword, its handle inlaid with gold and silver. The finds included weapons and personal jewelery. This is thought to be a Viking cemetery. In 2003 further human remains were uncovered.
