Burial in Lough Conn

In July 2000 human remains were discovered by fishermen on the shores of Lough Conn adjacent to Newtown townland (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 499). The remains were removed by Gardaí, and were later examined by Dr. M. J. O'Neill at the Dept. of Anatomy, NUIG. The bones were those of an adult human male, c. 165cm in height, aged c. 40 years at death. Most of the bones of the right side of the body were missing. The bones were stained a dark brown, and the vault of the skull contained shells of aquatic crustaceans and sediment. No details are recorded as to the deposition of the remains, or the depth at which they were found in the lake. (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 499).
