Kilkea Demesne holds a buried battlefield where ploughing uncovered human bones south of the castle. Fitzgerald interpreted the discovery as battle casualties rather than ordinary burial, transforming farmland into a killing ground. The field may have swallowed soldiers from an forgotten conflict, their marrow feeding barley before men remembered the violence beneath the soil.
