Aughrim’s blood may have soaked Ballydonnellan West, but no battle line has ever appeared. The graves keep their own counsel, hiding beneath turf and time. They belong to nobody recorded, which is why they remain dangerous.

The source of this record is a reference to ‘graves’ which local tradition identified as associated with the Battle of Aughrim (SMR file). This record was entered on the statutory Record of Monuments and Places (issued 1997) as ‘Battlefield – possible’. Jacobite and Williamite forces fought at the Battle of Aughrim on July 12, 1691, during the Williamite War in Ireland. The Williamites won a decisive victory, leading to the collapse of the Jacobite cause in Ireland and securing Protestant rule under William of Orange.
