Burial Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Twenty-two children died young enough to skip the adult church and enter the earth beside a ancient rath in County Galway. They did not need crosses or prayers, only a small rectangular hole and a low mound to mark the place where their bodies stopped moving. The land kept them without warning, without witness, and without the chance to be remembered.
Some 220m to the SE of a rath (GA106-144----). Marked on the OS 6-inch maps as a small roughly rectangular unenclosed area (c. 8m N-S; c. 7m E-W). Apart from a low circular mound (diam. 3m) no visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 September 2019

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
