What is recorded here

Rathgeran’s burial ground keeps its dead beneath an irregular corner of field where low banks still mark the boundary. The local name Reilg suggests people remembered the place long before written records appeared. Those forgotten bodies may have belonged to neighbours, travellers or victims of some lost cruelty, but the soil no longer separates them.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Irregularly-shaped uncultivated area in corner of field, defined by field walls at NE, E and S and by low bank elsewhere. Known locally as the 'Reilg'. Low banks of uncertain origin visible in interior.
