Kilferagh holds an oval burial ground where one man, Mr. Ryan, was buried in the nineteenth century while the surrounding land waited in forgotten silence. The enclosure still lies in pasture near the River Nore, its smooth surface preserving more than its people remember. What was forgotten there may have been sacred long before it became private, and the house to the northeast still stands witness to the change.

In pasture, c. 400m W of the River Nore. Within a large oval enclosure (KK019-049001-) in the grounds of Kilfera House which lies c. 460m to the NE. The enclosure had been used as a private burial ground in the 19th century. Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 221-2) mentions the foundations of a structure within the interior of the enclosure which he interprets as a church though which is more likely to be a landscape feature. He states that, 'Beside the church is the grave of Mr. Ryan, of Kilferagh Ho., who died some years ago. Save for this grave and the foundations of the church, the inside of the enclosure presents a smooth, unbroken surface. The people know nothing of this most ancient place, and call it by no special name. They never heard of it to be used as a churchyard, and never knew of anyone to be buried in it but Mr. Ryan’ (ibid.). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 12 October 2020
