What is recorded here
Kilcolman’s burial ground stands as a rough circular earthwork in a gently sloping pastoral field, marked on old maps as disused but still holding the shape of human loss. Its earthen bank, three to four metres wide and barely a metre high, encloses a space large enough for generations of quiet rites. The slight exterior fosse suggests deliberate separation, a boundary drawn between the living and the dead. Even now, the grass grows thick over what may be forgotten names, waiting for someone to walk the edge and remember that burial is not an ending but a transfer of presence into soil.
This site is situated in a pastoral field where the land is gently sloping in a N-S direction. It consists of a rough circular area (KE002-048002-) enclosed by an earthen bank and measures 42m N-S, 38m E-W internally, and 46m N-S, 42m E-W externally. The bank measures 3m-4.6m in width at the base and has a maximum height of c 1m externally and .4m-1.2m externally. There is a slight trace of an exterior fosse In the N to W which measures c 1m wide and .4m deep. This site is marked on the 1841-42 OS map as 'Old burial ground' and on the 1914 edition as 'burial ground (disused)'.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 844. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
