What is recorded here
Burial Ground is an irregular graveyard on a west-facing slope in County Kerry, Ireland, where cut-stone tombs cluster around a church and fade into overgrowth. Headstones dating from 1812 onward mark lives lived and lost beside the road, while a rubble wall and iron gate still direct visitors through the entrance. The place holds both memory and mystery, inviting quiet reflection among the dead and the living landscape.
In pasture, on the W-facing slope of a low hill, to the SW of a road. An irregular graveyard (min. L c. 91m NE-SW; min. Wth c. 52m NW-SE) enclosed by an uncoursed rubble wall (H c. 1.6m) which has been repaired recently. The entrance is in the E wall of the graveyard and a second entrance is marked by a stile at the S end of the W wall. Access to the E entrance from the main road is through a gate and stile and along an avenue (L 26m; Wth 5.5m). Cut-limestone pillars and a wrought iron gate mark the roadside entrance. There is a modern altar situated along the avenue. A path runs inside the perimeter wall. The ground is high in the NE sector and elsewhere falls from the NE down to the W and SW. There is a church (KE058-072002-) in the NE sector and the remains of a second structure to the SW of the church. Cut-stone and masonry tombs are concentrated within the church interior and outside it to the NW and SW. Many of the tombs are covered in overgrowth. Headstones date mainly to the 19th and 20th centuries. The earliest headstone noted dates to 1812. The graveyard is indicated as an irregular area (dims. c. 58m E-W; c. 50m N-S) outlined by dashes on the 1846 OS 6-inch map.
