What is recorded here
Inside an ancient rath in County Mayo, children were buried for centuries until the practice stopped. The land has kept that purpose in memory, marked only by low stones beneath grass. What happened there belongs to the dead and the living who loved them.
In a rath (MA063-01001-). The interior of the rath was used as a children’s burial ground, as indicated on the 1838 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps. A few low stones, which may be grave markers, protrude from the grass cover in the rath interior.
