Quakers died and lay unmarked beside Benduff Castle, believing stones and titles cluttered the equality of death. Then someone built William Morris a rectangular tomb, and the tradition claims that visible rank wound them so deeply they stopped burying anyone at all. The field swallowed the quiet place, leaving only a D-shaped island of untilled earth and one stubborn marker to prove the disagreement.

In tillage, beside road just N of entrance to Benduff Castle (Castle Salem) (CO134-036001-). Quaker burial ground identified by D-shaped island of untilled land, at E side of field, with large tree at centre; on N side of tree simple rectangular tomb of William Morris; according to local tradition the erection of this tomb so distressed the Quakers that no further burials took place.
