Buncrana Castle

Buncrana Castle stands on a narrow Donegal peninsula where the Crana River meets Lough Swilly, its white-rendered pavilions and scrolled doorway marking a rare eighteenth-century departure from older fortified housing. The house faces the water like a stage set for weather, while a handball alley, bridge, gate lodge and terraced gardens extend its life beyond the main walls. It remains one of Inishowen’s finest surviving country houses, elegant enough to suggest confidence and old enough to remember the region’s earlier violence.
